The Genius of Photography- Part 5 We Are Family

The Genius of Photography Part 5 – We are Family.

Diane arbus believed that the camera gave the people a way to strip back the evidence about a person and let people see the real version of themselves through photography.

What I like about Arbus is that she took to photography in a different light to other photographers at that time. She prowled down back ally ways and streets to find the “fantastic” people to photograph, the ones who she believed were the most interesting. “My favorite thing is to go where I’ve never been”.

I found it interesting how Arbus photographed what she considered weird people as well as those who were considered normal because it shows that she left herself open minded to the world of photography. “Freaks was a thing I photographed a lot…. Most people go through life dreading they’ll have a traumatic experience. Freaks were born with their trauma. They’ve already passed their test in life. They’re aristocrats.”

My favourite photograph from Arbus’ collection is Child with Toy Hand Grenade in Central Park, N.Y.C. Colin Wood is the young boy in this picture. Arbus was photographing people in central park and came across this little boy who she found interesting and took a series of photographs of him. This is my favourite photograph of her collection because I think it shows a lot about the person she is and how open minded she was about photographing people of all ages from all backgrounds.
